How 3D printing is changing supply chains

3D Printing.jpg

After 30 years in development, practical applications of 3D printing are now becoming commonplace and disrupting traditional businesses. Supply chains across diverse industries such as aerospace, healthcare and electronics are devising solutions to enable them to take advantage of market opportunities.  Doctors can print a model of a person’s heart before tackling invasive surgery and logistics companies can build drones to address delivery challenges.  Printing of 3D guns – maybe not so good?

What is 3D printing?

Industrial style 3D printers inject materials in successive patterns to build a three-dimensional object.  The term “additive manufacturing” is used to explain this principle.  Various types of technologies are applied but they all have the same objective: to create complex designs and customizable products on an individual basis with less effort than traditional manufacturing processes.

3D technology is a supply chain disruptor

3D printing technology enables companies to design and produce new customised products to meet the end user’s growing needs for personalization.  Consumers have become accustomed to being able to demand products with variations that were not previously available.  The rise of e-commerce is compounding the need for retailers to be innovative and responsive.  The extensive use of mobile devices is also feeding the need for instant gratification and same day deliveries.

In order to stay competitive in the online marketplace, companies are turning to 3D printing to create their products quicker.   The analyst firm Canalys anticipates that the worldwide market for 3D printers and its associated materials and services will grow to $20.2 billion by 2019.

The advances in 3D printing have been a game changer for manufacturers.  Certain types of spare parts can be printed on demand.  This means reduced lead times for their customers, lower inventory levels and cost savings in warehousing.   Significant competitive advantage can be gained by speed-to-market.

 Aerospace

GE Aviation has announced plans to manufacture 40,000 jet fuel nozzles by 2020. GE is also designing an advanced turboprop that replaces more than 850 parts of a normal aircraft engine with only 12 3D-printed components. Boeing and Airbus have both made significant investments in the technology.  Airbus has unveiled a drone made of parts that have been 3D printed in polyamide.

Both GE and Airbus have found that the technology allows them to redesign aircraft parts to reduce their weight, saving costly fuel.

Automotive

Leading automotive manufacturers were the early adopters. Ford, Mercedes Benz and BMW are all continuing to look at how to improve service levels.  Spare parts can be produced on demand nearer to the market they serve from designs that are sent electronically across the world.

Healthcare

The precision that comes with 3D technology is a boon for the medical professions. Custom-made prostheses can now be produced with less weight improving wearability.  Models can be made of the human heart and its arteries to allow surgeons to preview conditions before embarking on invasive surgery.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can also benefit.  They have the freedom to buy local and save themselves the complications of importing, storing and transporting goods and the associated administrative headaches.

Impact on the logistics industry

As 3D printing technology develops and is used more widely, the logistics sector will be affected.  As manufacturing processes are simplified, supply chains will be shorter and the demand for transport will change.  It is projected that the volume of imports from Asia to Europe will drop considerably in the next few years.

Logistics companies such as DHL and UPS are already benefitting from on-demand printing by providing extended distribution facilities and partnering with 3D printing companies.

The main benefits of 3D printing

  • Reduced production times
  • Lower inventory levels and less obsolete products
  • Printing-on-demand using digital files
  • Fewer suppliers through consolidating purchases
  • Local supply means cheaper transport and easier logistics.
  • Increased Responsiveness

According to a recent Gartner survey….

Garther Survey Results

The rise and rise of 3D printing

Industrial-grade 3D printers cost upwards of US $1 million.  The challenge in the longer term is to improve the technology and make the printers faster, cheaper and more agile.  They need to be able to use different raw materials and be capable of producing higher-quality items.  Increased accessibility to hardware, software and new raw materials is already driving down the cost of 3D printers.

Check out our Guest Blog

merger 2018.jpg

Supply Chain and Logistics specialists Gideon Hillman Consulting guest blog for Cast UK on the topic of Supply Chain Consequences of Supermarket Mergers.

Since their acquisition of Argos back in 2016, it seems Sainsburys have been left with an insatiable appetite for more; and as we approach mid-year 2018, the FMCG retailer has revealed plans to merge with their supposedly regarded rivals, north of the wall; Asda.

Following the successful integration of Argos into Sainsbury’s stores two years previous, many may now question whether the true purpose of this strategy was more advanced, than to seemingly provide consumers with added value, and a more convenient in-store customer-experience.

Certainly, as plans further develop for Sainsburys, it seems clear that they have bigger ideas, which apparently involve wider-reaching plans to purportedly protect their high-street stores against the ever-increasing threat from the all-encompassing ecommerce beast, Amazon.

Whatever the intended plans to prevail are for this proposed merger, there will be many of the opinion that the future of retail, lies in online commerce; who argue that there is no longer a niche in the market for discount high-street stores, due to the availability and value for money offered by online retailers.

In spite of this, Sainsburys’ plans disclosed so far, not only propose to create Britain’s biggest supermarket chain – with more than 2800 stores (including Argos, which is owned by Sainsbury’s) – but could ultimately result in them surpassing current leader, Tesco.

Whilst historically there has thought to exist an implicit north, south divide between the two stores, it seems that differences have more recently been put aside, amidst both brands having spent years fighting common enemies: prestigious discount stores, Lidl and Aldi.

This competition may additionally explain Tesco’s 2018, £4bn takeover of wholesaler Booker, which in turn, generated the creation of a new dominant player in Britain’s £200bn-a-year food market. Moreover, allegedly Amazon and Morrisons are also negotiating their own deal to deliver groceries using the ‘pantry’ delivery service.

It appears that the competition is truly on; as Sainsbury’s seemingly sudden venture, further resounds retailers’ rising retaliation, for monopolisation of the supermarket sector, and with this, the urge to continue to delight their consumers by delivering lower prices, improved convenience, and an endless variety of products, in-store.

Yet, whilst these mergers on the surface, may equate to initial financial gains, and increased market share power for the retailers involved; exactly what significance does this shift in shopping circumstance mean for the consumer, and more importantly, what actually are the wider-reaching implications involved for Supply Chains?

At present, direct job losses and store closures have initially been ruled out; and despite fears surrounding Brexit, the merge is predicted to provide a 10% reduction in produce prices for consumers.

Statistics from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reflect that the retail sector is undeniably experiencing significant and rapid change, as customer shopping habits continue to evolve; with further reports predicting that if this North / South merge is approved by the Competition Authority, it will result in the biggest supermarket chain in Britain, dominating a 30% market place share; facilitating significant cost savings, in turn, generating profit.

It has however been reported, that these projected lower consumer prices could become the unfortunate burden of the supply chain; meaning that whilst these estimated savings may be successfully achieved and delivered, they will more likely than not, only materialise, by cutting costs further down the supply chain.

Realistically, it is this necessity for cost savings which could dictate the required negotiation for lower prices when sourcing direct from suppliers, which could serve to threaten the wider-reaching supply chain operations.

This in turn, is fuelling fears that, due to a decrease in supermarket retail prices being passed through to output prices for suppliers, supply chain output could become significantly reduced, and unavoidably result in many unfortunate job losses within the Logistics Industry.

Presently, whilst the true impact this merger and the wider-reaching implications which could pose a risk to the greater supply chain, remain unknown; only time will tell us whether the result will be a hap-hazard hindrance or sweeping success for the supermarket sector.

Successful First Quarter 2018 for GH Consulting

2018 has been an extremely successful year for GH so far, with an amazing 16 new contracts won already in this first very prosperous quarter including new and repeat projects, from the Manufacturer of leading skincare brands NIVEA, Eucerin, Elastoplast and Atrixo – Beiersdorf; Designers of specialist and technical outdoor equipment – Equip Outdoor Technologies, and Bespoke window furnishing products provider – Hallis Hudson Group.

Throughout this first quarter, many additional exciting new projects are also already under-way for the GH team, including the design and implementation of a new distribution centre in Cyprus for A. Zorbas & Sons Ltd; the largest supplier of freshly prepared food, bakery and confectionary products in Cyprus with three production sites, and its own distribution network supplying major retailers and 60 of its own stores on the island, employing over 2,100 people.

Regarded as one of the UK’s leading Supply Chain and Logistics Consultancies servicing its clients throughout the UK and Europe; the Gideon Hillman Consulting team eagerly anticipate what the remainder of the year has in store; ready to use their extensive range of services including but not limited to: Supply Chain Management, Warehouse Design and Optimisation, Logistics Network Reviews, and Inventory Management to support many more new and returning clients throughout what is predicted to be a pleasantly prosperous 2018.

The Great Chocolate Charade

With Easter just around the corner, retailers have by now, received many deliveries of chocolate eggs, stocking an abundance of egg shaped chocolate treats, now proudly lining their store shelves.

The infamous Cadbury Crème Egg which made its debut back in 1923, has of course already made its eagerly awaited appearance in our stores. Upon the arrival of The Crème Egg, the festivities of Easter are officially in the air.

On best behaviour, children have high hopes that the elusive Easter bunny will reward them in the form of the gift of a delicious chocolate egg.

However, for some, the delightful story of this bountiful bunny it seems, is too tall a tale.

White, dark, milk, hollow, filled, elaborately decorated, honeycombed; there is a plethora of eggs, some which seem a little surplus to requirements, never the less, the choice is yours for the taking.

But how on earth can just one Easter Bunny single-handedly make, and deliver, all of these different eggs on time?

Just like the logistical-legend Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny’s supposedly rapid routine has roused suspicions, and questions have been raised concerning the help which the bunny must rely on, to make the magic of Easter happen; with an estimated 80 million chocolate eggs sold each year in the UK, they may not want to admit it, but the Easter Bunny is definitely getting help from somewhere.

In 2017, there were reports of Easter Eggs having been spotted in shops just before Christmas 2016. Sightings of the treasured Cadbury Creme egg and Mini eggs were reported in some supermarkets, from as early as19th Dec 2016!

Statistics from Cadbury reveal that during peak season, the Cadbury factory churns out somewhere between 1.2 and 1.5 million crème eggs per day; and according to Cadbury, more than 200 million crème eggs are sold every year in the UK alone.

But how does the Easter Bunny ensure that all of these eggs reach us in time for Easter and in some cases sooner?

The manufacture of Cadbury Products relies on eight manufacturing sites and three distribution centres alone, throughout the UK, to ensure Easter is delivered on time.

In addition to this, many Cadbury products are created in the UK, meaning shorter supply chains, and thus a shorter waiting time for their products to hit our retailers’ shelves.

According to this, the Easter Bunny is certainly not just putting all of our eggs into one basket.

As for other eggs, not produced so close to home, the key to quick confectionary production relies on the increase in automation of processes in the warehouse.

Brands, such as Nestle, make Easter eggs, which account for a third of all products produced. At peak times their facility can move up to 3,000 tonnes of goods each day, with a vehicle departing every eight and a half minutes; definitely conducive to helping the Easter Bunny deliver on time.

With UK distribution centres, and warehouse automation promoting automated Easter Egg production, the Easter Bunny it seems gets more than a helping hand, to ensure that Easter is delivered on time, in our stores and ultimately within the comfort of our own homes.

The importance of effective Supply Chain Management

Gideon Hillman Consulting takes a look at the importance of an effective supply chain management strategy and summarises the key points manufacturers must focus on when evaluating how their supply chain operates…

How does Supply Chain Management impact manufacturing?
Supply chain management affects manufacturing in a variety of ways, from both a daily operational, and a strategic perspective. It is an important aspect of manufacturing, for industry managers and entrepreneurs alike; impacting upon processes including but not limited to the availability of inputs needed for production processes, costs and profitability of manufactured items, company infrastructure and ways in which companies interact with their suppliers and customers.

How can manufacturers implement effective Supply Chain Management?
Reliable delivery of inputs are imperative to enabling manufacturers to fulfil time-sensitive orders. Effective supply chain management ensures that raw materials consistently arrive at manufacturing production facilities on time, in turn preventing the need to source additional materials from alternative sources, subsequently avoiding higher prices and preventing lower profitability.

How does Supply Chain Management affect manufacturing distribution costs?
Lower supply-chain costs and overall boosted profitability can be achieved when manufacturers implement a cost-efficient supply chain, purchasing, and order-processing systems. This can be further emphasised by manufacturers adopting new and innovative technologies within the supply chain, including but not limited to investing in optimum routing and navigation systems for freight drivers, fuel-efficient vehicles, and by implementing stricter handling procedures.

What extraneous variables can affect Supply Chain Management and in turn manufacturers?
Management of both company infrastructure and supplier and customer integration within supply chain management can enable manufacturers to achieve optimum efficiency within all of their production processes, allowing them to remain competitive within the global marketplace. Additionally, manufacturers implementing continuous quality improvement programs, can initiate changes to wider reach supply-chain dynamics, encouraging collaboration with customers, suppliers, distribution systems, and transportation contractors.

‘Warehouse and Logistics News’ reflects on Gideon Hillman Consulting’s highlights of 2017, in their 2018 Annual Interview (Part 2)

Human Bridge working until dawn

WLN – Why should customers choose you as their main supplier in your area?
We are known for our ‘hands-on’ approach and ability to provide strategic solutions through an analytical and practical process, with a strong bias towards resource optimisation and manageable implementation all for a fixed cost. Through an operational focused approach, we provide practical and implementable solutions with the lowest investment options considered first. For example, if someone needs a warehouse improved, we don’t consider full or part automation until we first ensure that the manual operation is optimised. Once that cannot be improved any further, we then consider, whether alternatives such as automation will make any improvement and provide an acceptable return on investment for the client. The analysis and solutions specific to client requirements are presented with clear and concise rationale and where appropriate costed and tested.

RECENT TRADING

WLN – What’s business been like in the past year? How have conditions changed over this period and how have you reacted?
We have once again experienced significant growth in the last 12 months in what is becoming a more competitive market. Despite this we have achieved in excess of 25% year on year revenue growth in 2017 on the previous 12 months. The growth for us has been greatest in the Logistics Network Design and Warehousing side of the business particularly within the e-commerce, FMCG, Retail and Construction sectors; which is consistent with the developments in the UK Logistics and Warehousing sector. Adapting to the steep increase in business has been easier for us this year as we had already experienced a similar level of growth in 2015 and 2016, having therefore implemented the resource and strategic infrastructure to react quickly to new and existing client demands and the increases in the number and size of projects undertaken. Our business strategy developed over the last 24 months which includes investment into the right people, systems and infrastructure, which always pays off when implemented and managed correctly.

WLN – How have you fine-tuned your offering in the last 12 months and why?
We are always looking at innovative ways of adding to our service offering and ensure we keep on top of all current and future developments in technology and trends within the industry. This does not detract from (on the contrary it enhances) our core areas of expertise in reviewing current process and operations and developing strategy and solutions for all aspects of Supply Chain and Logistics. We don’t change our core offering and message to clients as the basic principles and factors that make up successful logistics operations remain constant; however, we are constantly refining what we do and identifying client needs and requirements to manage continual improvement.

Whatever we do we focus on and remain true to our established core values:

· To be the best we can be through the delivery of pragmatic and implementable solutions to our clients.

· To engage fully with our clients and to be as passionate about their business as we are about our own.

· To be the first port of call when our clients need specialist expertise to help achieve their objectives.

· To maintain our reputation for providing real and measurable value in our client’s Supply Chain

WLN – What recent enhancements have you made in customer service?
We are in the process of implementing our developed strategy to enhance the whole customer experience of working with us right through from initial enquiry to successful completion of a project and of course continuing to repeat business with our clients. This includes much improved software systems and customer focused support staff. We have successfully implemented the new HubSpot CRM and Sales Pro system to enhance our business and project management capabilities and provide a much more efficient client interface.

WLN – What new products and services have you brought out?
This year we have successfully started to use our 3D warehouse simulation for implementing and routing of robots in the warehouse environment for specific clients. We are continuing to develop and refine various Inventory models and also continue to enhance ‘The Resource Optimiser’ Activity Based Planning Tool which enables the forward forecasting of labour requirements for all functions within Warehouse and Distribution Centre (DC) operations. By producing a long term labour forecast the recruitment process can be managed efficiently and eliminates the need for immediate knee-jerk reaction to flex capability.

GOING FORWARD

WLN – Are you investing in new premises and extra staff? What about staff development and training?
As previously mentioned we are implementing our enhanced customer service strategy and as part of this we are in the process of hiring a Commercial Manager to join the senior team in early 2018 and have moved to bigger offices to accommodate the office based and improved client focused team supporting our consultants and clients. Our Marketing Executive, Natasha Raymond has just completed her first year with us during which she has successfully gained her Certification of ‘Digital Marketing Award’ from the Chartered Institute of Marketing and in addition is now Sales Software Certified by the HubSpot Academy.

WLN – Are you involved in any major trade shows or other industry events over the next year?
We currently have stands booked at IntraLogistex at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry and a at Multimodal at the NEC 2018. In addition, we are already booked in for IMHX in 2019.

WLN – What big news from Gideon Hillman can our readers look forward to seeing in Warehouse & Logistics News in 2018?
We always have service and system developments in the pipeline and no doubt some of these will be released during 2018, of which we will of course keep you and your readers informed!

WLN – And finally, if you had to sum up your company in a tweet what would it be?
@gidhillman – The #Logistics #supplychain & #warehousing #specialistconsultants

‘Warehouse and Logistics News’ reflects on Gideon Hillman Consulting’s highlights of 2017, in their 2018 Annual Interview (Part 1)

Logistics Management Freight Service Production Concept

WLN – What are your best-known products and services?
We are widely recognised as one of (if not the) leading Logistics and Distribution Network Design and Warehouse / Distribution Centre design and process optimisation specialist consultancies in the UK. Our standing in the market is verified and validated by the numerous customer testimonials that we have and that can be seen on our website and the major brand names within our client portfolio.

WLN – Which market sectors and countries are your customers in? Which ones are growing fastest?
We continue to work across a range of industries with clients in Multi-Channel Retail (including e-commerce), FMCG, Drinks Retail, Food Processing and Production, Utilities and Construction, General Industrial and Manufacturing, Third Party Logistics and Outsourcing, Automotive and Aerospace, and the Public Sector. The fastest growing route to market is e-commerce and therefore e-fulfilment in most sectors and in the last 12 months we have been working for them in the UK, Poland, Cyprus, Germany and East Africa.

WLN – How do your services benefit your customers’ businesses?
We can quickly identify the reasons behind a sub-optimised complete logistics network or single warehouse. Once the reasons have been identified then we develop the optimal solution and support the client with implementation on the basis that the client takes ownership for the ongoing strategy. This is a critical part of clients improving business performance. We can provide them with the strategy and the tools and they must embrace the changes, as after all it is their business.
